چکیده
We present the first detailed account of modelling pulses in Helmholtz-type nonlinear systems with both temporal and spatial dispersion. Exact analytical solitons will be reported, and their stability examined through mathematical analysis and computer simulations. © 2010 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (190.5530) Pulse propagation and temporal solitons; (190.4400) Nonlinear optics, materials.

Negative Group Delay and Pulse Compression in Superluminal Pulse Propagation
We systematically study the pulse advance and pulse compression in light propagation through a transparent, anomalously dispersive medium. Using an Argand diagram, we show that pulse compression is the only form of pulse distortion, while other forms of pulse distortion can be eliminated. Experimentally, we implement a dual-band electronic amplifier to measure the negative pulse group delay and...
متن کاملDispersive propagation of ultraslow light in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate
One dimensional propagation of ultraslow optical pulses in an atomic BoseEinstein condensate taking into account the dispersion and the spatial inhomogeneity is investigated. Analytical and semi-analytical solutions of the dispersive inhomogeneous wave equation modeling the ultraslow pulse propagation are developed and compared against the standard wave equation solvers based upon Cranck-Nichol...
متن کاملDiffraction-free and dispersion-free pulsed beam propagation in dispersive media.
The diffraction of pulsed beams of light is formulated as an anomalously dispersive phenomenon. In a dispersive material, the effects of material group-velocity dispersion and diffraction on pulsed beam propagation can mutually cancel if the transverse profile of the pulse is suitably chosen.
متن کاملPropagation of short pulses through a Bose-Einstein condensate
We study propagation of short laser pulses in a Bose-Einstein condensate taking into account dispersive effects under the conditions for electromagnetically induced transparency. We calculate dispersion coefficients using typical experimental parameters of slow-light schemes in condensates. By numerically propagating the laser pulse, and referring to theoretical estimations, we determine the co...
متن کاملObservation of the complex propagation of a femtosecond laser pulse in a dispersive transparent bulk material
Pulse shapes in a dispersive transparent material modulated by group-velocity dispersion, self-phase modulation, and self-focusing induced by a femtosecond laser light were observed directly with femtosecond timeresolved optical polarigraphy probing the induced instantaneous birefringence. The first observation of the state of femtosecond laser pulses about the interaction region inside the tra...
